JOHN MAYALL (°1933†2023) zal altijd bijblijven als een begenadigd mondharmonicaspeler, toetsenist en gitarist. Als (soms eigenzinnige, moeilijke maar vaak ook grappige) bandleider was hij ook uitzonderlijk. Hij had een opmerkelijk talent om getalenteerde muzikanten te herkennen, te promoten en een omgeving te creëren waarin zij konden floreren. In de sixties bestond zijn band THE BLUESBREAKERS uit Eric Clapton en Jack Bruce (die later Cream oprichtten), Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood en John McVie (de oprichters van Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (die later de Rolling Stones vervoegde), Jon Hiseman, Tony Reeves en Dick Heckstall-Smith (die later Colosseum stichtten) en Andy Fraser (die later Free oprichtte), enzovoort.

Mayall had in de jaren ’60 verschillende albums in de Britse hitlijsten, waaronder (het méést bekende), ‘Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton’, waarschijnlijk het meest invloedrijke Britse bluesalbum aller tijden. Maar in de jaren zeventig moest hij vechten voor succes en erkenning. De hereniging met zijn voormalige bandleden Mick Taylor, John McVie en Colin Allen voor een tournee leek Mayall opnieuw te motiveren. In 1984 vormde hij de Bluesbreakers met gitaristen Walter Trout en Coco Montoya, die ‘THE POWER of the BLUES PART II’ opnamen. De Trout/Montoya Bluesbreakers gingen onvermijdelijk uit elkaar. Drummer Joe Yuele bleef tot 2008 bij Mayall, terwijl Trout en Montoya de groep respectievelijk in 1989 en 1993 verlieten om hun eigen bands te leiden. Bassist Bobby Haynes verliet de band ook in 1990 om zijn eigen pad te volgen. Hij overleed op 31 juli 2018 op 83-jarige leeftijd. John Mayall overleed op 90-jarige leeftijd in zijn woning in Californië. Een precieze doodsoorzaak werd niet meegedeeld. “Gezondheidsproblemen dwongen John om een einde te maken aan zijn concertleven en hebben er uiteindelijk toe geleid, dat een van de grootste reizigers ter wereld in vrede kan rusten…" (aldus de persmededeling).

Na de korte “Layla”-intro komt de band echt op dreef op “I Ain’t Got You”. “Cold, Cold Feeling” is de slow blues à la lettre met gitaar van Trout & Montoya “à volonté” en dat de ondertussen klassieker “All Your Love” uit het album ‘Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton’ (1966) komt, is een zowat “vanzelfsprekend”. “Somebody’s Acting Like a Child” werd in 1985 voor ‘Behind the Iron Curtain’ met Mick Taylor in de hoofdrol opgenomen en “It’s My Own Fault”, de afsluiter, is een rustig nummer uit het gelijknamige album.
